Another great choice for hiking is Garland Ranch Regional Park in the scenic Carmel Valley. This is a dog friendly park with areas that allow dogs to roam off-leash. There are lots of trails to choose from for beginners to experienced hikers. Breathtaking scenery!

A Taste of Wine features the wines of more than 65 Central Coast wineries. Some Monterey wineries have no tasting room of their own, but their wines are available to taste here. For your convenience, A Taste of Wine also offers wines from wineries that do have tasting rooms. Wine consultants serve the wine and are available to answer your questions. The Salinas location is located in an historic 110 year old building in Old town Salinas across from the National Steinbeck Center. The Monterey location is a block from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This might be the perfect place to start your central coast wine tasting.

John and James Cotta have been producing award-winning wines since 1986. The tasting room is located at Cannery Row in downtown Monterey. Baywood is known for its great Cabernet Sauvignon. When you taste their port, you realize quickly that it deserves all the awards it has won. They produce a large variety of types of wines. If you like dessert wines, you must try Baywood’s Late Harvest Symphony. It’s made from 100% Botrytis, full of fruit with a nice smooth finish.

50% of their production is Chardonnay. Their flagship wine is Marinus, which is a Bordeaux style blend made of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15.5 % Merlot, .25 % Cabernet Franc, and .25% Petit Verdot. This is a complex wine with a smooth finish. This award winning Monterey winery also has lovely accommodations and restaurants.

This Monterey winery enjoys panoramic views of the Salinas Valley from its 1000 foot elevation. This winery has won too many awards for us to mention them all. At the 2005 Orange County Fair Hahn won 3 gold medals for the 2003 Syrah, 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2003 Meritage.

Heller Estate uses no pesticides or herbicides in the production of their grapes. They are one of the few California Central Coast wineries producing organically grown wines. Every wine we tasted was great. We especially loved the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and the Estate Merlot. The owner, Toby Heller, is a sculptor whose works are displayed throughout the United States and around the world. Pictures of her sculptures adorn the wine labels and you can view Toby Heller sculptures while picnicking in the beautiful sculpture garden outside the wine tasting room. The tasting room manager is friendly, making you feel welcome and relaxed.

Joullian Vineyards has a charming tasting room made of stone in Carmel Valley. It is beautifully landscaped with splashes of color. You can picnic on their outdoor patio and enjoy their relaxing surroundings.The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and the wines were all great. We loved the aroma on the Pinot Grigio and the taste was well balanced. We also recommend the Chardonnay, Reserve Cabernet,and the Julien Port. This Monterey winery is a good stop for central coast wine tasting.

Their tasting room is newly opened and is usually staffed by one of the owners, a husband and wife team of Marilyn and Joel who are assisted by their two golden retrievers, Hogan and Snead. Their wines include Marsanne, Rousanne, Rose de Saignee, Grenache, Syrah, and Petite Sirah. The Petite Sirah earned 90 points from Wine Enthusiast.
Paraiso Vineyards

Paraiso has 2 wines that are only available at the tasting room. It’s worth the trip to taste their Late Harvest Pinot Noir and Souzao Port. This family run Monterey winery specializes in premium quality wines including Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.

San Saba Vineyard

This Monterey winery produces 2 labels, San Saba and Bocage. They do have wines that are available only at the tasting rooms. San Saba is their premium label. San Saba has been producing fine wines since 1981.

Scheid is one of the largest independent growers of premium wine grapes in California. Their primary business is growing and selling wine grapes to wineries that then produce wine from them. Scheid also produces limited quantities of Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, and White Riesling.

This tasting room is located inside the Monterey Plaza Hotel. Here you can taste wine produced by California Central Coast wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains from Monterey County grapes. Besides tasting wines from Silver Mountain Vineyards, you can also taste Sonnet Wines and Loma Prieta Wines.

This Monterey winery was established in 1972 and is recognized for its many award-winning wines. Wines unique to Ventana include Magnus, a Bordeaux blend; Due Amici, a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Sangiovese; a Rhone blend called Beaugravier; and Dry Rosado.This winery shares a parking lot with a great restaurant called Tarpy’s Roadhouse, which is right next door.
