Chateau Montelena is a stone castle built against a hillside with views of the Chinese gardens and lake. This Calistoga winery was one of the U.S. wineries to upset the French wine world during the Paris Tasting of 1976 by winning first place for a white wine. This was a turning point for world recognition for California wines. Stroll the beautiful wooded grounds of Chateau Montelena.

This Calistoga winery has been described as “a temple to wine and art”. Stroll the grounds and enjoy the sculptures, sample fine wines in the tasting room, and picnic amidst the beauty of this winery. Clos Pegase has 20,000 square feet of caves including a Cave Theater, where events are often held. Tours are free and there’s no need for a reservation unless you are a large group.

Dutch Henry was established in 1992. It is a small California winery that specializes in small lots of premium wines. Their signature wine is their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Chafen Vineyards. They also produce Syrah, a Bordeaux blend called Argos, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Chardonnay. Leashed dogs are welcome. It’s best to give them a call to make reservations.

This Calistoga winery is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce other great wines including Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, and Roussane. This is a favorite stop for Napa Valley wine tasting. Reverie is a small winery that produces small lots of premium wines that usually sell out within 3 or 4 months. Call ahead. It's a scenic drive back to this winery on Diamond Mountain Road. There are picnic facilities as well.

This Calistoga winery produces Chardonnay, Rose, Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Muscat Canelli. Our favorite was the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, which won a Silver medal at the SF Chronicle Wine Competition in 2006.

This Calistoga winery specializes in making premium Merlot using classic traditional techniques that are very labor intensive. They also have a very limited production of Pinot Noir. The family that owns Silver Oak Winery in Oakville also owns Twomey Cellars. They definitely know how to make wine. Their Merlot is unlike any other Merlot we have tasted. It has a dark ruby color with flavors of cherry and chocolate. It's velvety silkiness is delightful. The wine is complex, but very smooth.
