California Breweries

Beer from the tap

California breweries are located throughout the state. There are more breweries in California than any other state. More than 22,000 Californians are employed by breweries.

The overwhelming majority of breweries in the state are craft breweries; independently owned establishments with small productions that focus on quality.

California is credited with being the birthplace of American craft beer. Memorable moments in the history of beer making in the state include:

  • 1965 - Fritz Maytag purchases a failing brewery and turns it into a successful craft brewery, Anchor Brewing.

  • 1977 - Jack McAuliffe launched the first modernized microbrewery in the United States, New Albion Brewery in Sonoma.

  • 1980 - Ken Grossman started the highly acclaimed Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico.

  • 1983 - Mendocino Brewing opened the first brewpub in the state at Hopland.

  • Today there are more than 330 breweries in California and the number continues to climb. Most offer beer for sale. Quite a few also provide food. Some even provide live entertainment or tours. Take time to explore these establishments as you travel throughout the state.
