Napa Wine Tours
Napa Wine Tours are very popular with more than 5 million tourists visiting Napa each year. Napa Valley is Americas premier wine producing region as well as being recognized as one of the major wine regions of the world.
In addition to tasting the wines of Napa, people go to this region to enjoy its equally renowned gourmet restaurants and a multitude of other activities including train rides, mud baths, hot air balloons, and golf.
Located an hours drive north of San Francisco, there are more than 200 wineries producing wines amongst the breathtaking scenery. Napa Valley is only 30 miles long and ranges from 1 to 5 miles wide.
Napa Wine Tours are fun any time of the year, though summers can be hot in Napa Valley. If you like mild weather, spring and fall are the perfect time to plan a visit. However, a winter trip to Napa can be a real treat; especially if pamper yourself with a Calistoga mud bath and massage.
There are two main routes through the Napa Valley: Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail. On your Napa Wine Tour you may want to take Highway 29 in one direction and return via the Silverado Trail.
Highway 29 is the main road running through all the Napa Valley towns. This highway takes you right past some of the areas most famous wineries and restaurants. Its a beautiful drive; but it can be crowded, especially on weekends during the summer or early fall.
The Silverado Trail is another main road running parallel to Highway 29, but further to the east. Theres less traffic on the Silverado Trail because this route does not go through the towns of the Napa Valley. There are many Napa wineries along this route as well and you will find that traffic moves faster.
The towns of Napa Valley are not far apart. They include:
 Napa
 Yountville
 Oakville
 Rutherford
 St. Helena
 Calistoga

We are old enough that we remember when wine tasting in Napa Valley was free. Things have changed. As the premier wine region of the United States, they are able to charge more for their wines and for wine tasting. When we went to Napa in Spring, 2006 we found that the prices for tasting ranged from $5 to $25. Some wineries were even charging up to $20 per person for a tour of their winery.
The only complimentary wine tasting in Napa Valley that we know of is V Sattui on Hwy. 29 in Napa, and Rombauer off of the Silverado Trail in Calistoga. However, you can keep the cost of down by sharing a tasting with your partner. This is a widely accepted practice.
